Turner Field

Historic MLB ballpark (1997–2016) in Atlanta, GA.

What was it like to attend a game at Turner Field?

The conversion showed if you knew where to look — Turner Field never quite forgot it had been Centennial Olympic Stadium, and the asymmetrical upper deck gave the place an irregular silhouette that no purpose-built ballpark would have chosen. The Chop was omnipresent, the tomahawk chant rising with every two-strike count and carrying through those warm Georgia nights with genuine force. Concessions leaned Southern: fried options, sweet tea, pulled pork sandwiches alongside the standard ballpark fare. The park sat in a complicated stretch of south Atlanta, and most fans drove in, filling the sprawling surface lots that surrounded the building. Getting out after a night game was slow. The sightlines from the lower bowl were excellent, and a walk around the perimeter put the old Fulton County Stadium footprint underfoot — a home plate marker still embedded in the asphalt outside. Georgia State football plays there now.
