Sun Life Stadium

Historic MLB ballpark (1993–2011) in Miami Gardens, FL.

What was it like to attend a game at Sun Life Stadium?

The most telling detail about a Marlins game at Sun Life Stadium was the tarps. Vast sections of the upper deck stayed covered for baseball, shrinking a 75,000-seat football bowl into something that still felt oversized, even on a sell-out night. Crowds could be sparse and scattered on a Tuesday in June, the empty green seats a reminder this building was never designed for a ballgame. The South Florida heat sat heavy on the open-air field, and the concourse food ran toward standard stadium fare — Cuban sandwiches were the one local touch worth seeking out. Fans drove in from across Broward and Miami-Dade, the suburban location in Miami Gardens offering little to do before first pitch. But twice — October 1997 and October 2003 — the place shook in ways few ballparks ever do. It still stands as Hard Rock Stadium, hosting the Dolphins, with no trace of those championships left on the walls.
