Olympic Stadium

Historic MLB ballpark (1977–2004) in Montreal, QC.

What was it like to attend a game at Olympic Stadium?

The broken roof defined everything at Olympic Stadium. That vast concrete inclined tower loomed over the park like a promise nobody could keep — the retractable membrane tore repeatedly, and for long stretches the Expos simply played without it, exposed to Montreal weather in a bowl built for track and field. The scale worked against baseball: 46,000 seats that rarely filled made even a good crowd feel thin, voices swallowed by all that grey concrete. Poutine and smoked meat sandwiches gave the concessions a character no American park could match, and the French-speaking crowd brought a distinct energy when the team was good in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The park sat east of downtown near the Olympic Village, accessible by Metro. The Expos played their final game there in 2004 before becoming the Washington Nationals. The tower still stands, one of Montreal's more stubborn landmarks.
